Version 1.0
The first version of Frostshot.
Capture
- Area (⌥⇧1): the screen freezes the instant you press; drag over what matters and nudge any edge afterwards.
- Window (⌥⇧2): hover a window and click, corners and transparency included.
- Fullscreen (⌥⇧3): the whole display under the cursor.
- Repeat last area (⌥⇧R): the same rectangle again, for before-and-after shots.
The island
- One glass island under your selection: the tool, the color, the size and Copy.
- Box, arrow, line, ellipse, highlighter, text, blur and counters, right on the selection.
- Hover the island and it opens; click the color bead and a ring of colors blooms out of it.
- Undo, redo, and a stroke control that changes the selected mark live.
- Five keys decide where a capture goes. ⏎ copies it. ⇧⏎ copies it and starts the next capture. ⌘⏎ leaves it in the corner without copying. ⌥⏎ keeps it for later. esc discards it, and you can still get it back from Recent Captures. A hint line under the island shows them: “⏎ copy · ⌘⏎ corner · ⌥⏎ later · esc discard · ? shortcuts”.
- Keyboard first: Tab and the arrow keys walk the tools, esc folds.
- Every action is also in the island’s “…” menu, with its key: Leave in Corner, Keep for Later, Keep & next.
- Keyboard Shortcuts sheet: press ? to see every shortcut, with search.
Captures: the corner, Kept for Later and Recent Captures
A capture is always in exactly one of three places, and nothing disappears without you choosing it.
- The corner (bottom right) holds the captures you have not decided about: the ones you left with ⌘⏎ and the ones from a ⇧⏎ burst, annotations still editable. Nothing in it goes away by itself. It folds into a small tile with a count and opens sideways, every card the same size; point at it or press ⌥⇧L. It holds 30 and is still there after you quit.
- A new card arrives big. It shows at 1.15× for 3 seconds above the stack, then settles into its place. Point at it and it waits.
- Kept for Later lives in the notch (⌥⇧S). Press ⌥⏎ to keep a capture for later, or ⇧⌥⏎ to keep every card in the corner. It never expires and has no limit: it stays until you finish it or remove it.
- Copy or save a kept capture and it counts as done: it moves to Recent Captures, and a glass notice says “Done · moved to Recent Captures” with Undo. A switch in Settings lets it stay in Kept for Later instead; ⌥⌘C copies and keeps it there.
- Close a kept capture halfway through an edit and it goes back to Kept for Later with your edit, marked with a small pencil.
- Recent Captures remembers what you copy, discard or clear, and what you finish from Kept for Later. Open it with ⌥⇧H or from the menu bar menu. Click a capture to bring it back, ⌘-click to copy it, ⌥-click or ⌘E to open it in the Advanced editor without taking it off the list.
- Recent Captures keeps 7 days and up to 50 captures by default. Choose 1, 7 or 30 days, and 10, 25, 50 or 100 captures, or turn it off. All of it stays on your Mac, never in any cloud.
- Kept for Later and Recent Captures open in the same place: a black field that grows out of the notch. Switch from one list to the other and the row swaps in place, with no closing and reopening.
- The black field fades out in a long, soft gradient, with no visible band, in light and dark.
- Every card carries an age tag: a small glass pill that says “Just now”, “5 min ago”, “3 h ago”, “Yesterday” or a date, and adds the size when you point at it.
- Clear all, with Undo, and a Clear Captures shortcut you can set in Settings.
- Pin one and it floats above everything; resize it with a pinch, edit it with ⌘E, and close it to send the capture back where it came from (a new capture goes to the corner).
Notices
- One glass notice for the whole app. “✓ Copied” is a small pill with your capture’s thumbnail; after a moment it flies up to the notch, which shows where the capture went. Point at it and it waits, with Keep for Later, Edit and Pin.
- Notices that can be undone, such as “Captures cleared”, “Capture discarded” and “Done”, carry an Undo button.
Advanced editor
- Liquid Glass. The Advanced editor and the Settings window are real Liquid Glass, tinted neutral so it never looks blue. One checkbox, Use Liquid Glass, switches both to a flat graphite look, instantly. Reduce Transparency switches it off by itself.
- Frames, with six landscapes: Glacier Lake, Golden Dunes, Aurora Peaks, Alpine Meadow, Misty Fjord and Ocean Dusk.
- Looks: save a frame and the next capture matches it.
- ⌘K finds any tool or setting, previewed live on your picture.
- Crop, pen, numbered steps, spotlight, magnifier and redact, beside the island’s tools.
- Shape styles: outline, tint or fill; solid or dashed lines; open, filled or double arrowheads; and a full color picker.
- Pick a color from your capture: click the eyedropper in the middle of the color ring, in the island or in the Advanced editor, then any pixel. In the Advanced editor, I and ⌘K do the same.
- Lighter exports: pick a preset, such as Small for chat/email, and watch the file shrink before you save. Copy as File drops it into a chat.
- ⌥⇧E opens your last capture; Open from Clipboard opens an image you copied elsewhere.
Combine captures
- Mark two or more captures in the corner, in Kept for Later or in Recent Captures (⇧-click, or Space with the keyboard) and press ⌘J: they open in the Advanced editor as one picture.
- Stacked or side by side, two to eight captures, with the gap, the alignment and Match width or height in a new Combine section of the Frame panel.
- Drag to reorder, or press ⌥⌘↑ and ⌥⌘↓. Drop a card, a strip entry or an image from the Finder on the canvas: the edge you drop on decides where it goes.
- ⇧⏎ in quick edit adds the next capture to the combination you have open.
- Join seamlessly: capture a page, scroll, capture again, and one click removes the strip both captures show.
- Compare: two captures side by side labelled Before and After, a divider you drag to preview, and ⌘P to pin it with the divider live.
- The originals stay where they are until you copy or save the combination (then they move to Recent Captures, unless you press Keep them), and each capture keeps its own corners and shadow on the frame.
Copy Text
- Copy Text (⌥⇧⌘T) keeps line breaks and indentation; ⌥⇧T gives one paragraph per line.
- Code comes through as written, and recognition reads English and Spanish, on your Mac.
Redaction
- Redact sensitive data automatically: emails, phone numbers, card numbers, API keys and IP addresses blurred on every capture. Off by default, and it runs on your Mac.
- The eye button turns it on or off for one capture; ⌫ removes a blur, ⌘Z removes them all, ⇧⌘R finds them in the Advanced editor.
Private and fast
- No account, nothing uploaded, no network access at all.
- A native Mac app: copy is instant, and the Advanced editor opens with the picture already in it.
- Sold only on the Mac App Store, in one edition: there is no second version to choose between.
Settings
- Light, dark, or follow your Mac; pick an accent color, with Frost as the default, or Match macOS.
- Use Liquid Glass: one checkbox in General for the Advanced editor and Settings (see above).
- Settings › Captures follows a capture’s journey, top to bottom: In the corner (keep corner captures after quitting), Kept for Later (remove a capture once you copy or save it, and how much space it uses, with Clear…) and Recent Captures (keep recent captures, for how long, and how many).
- Every global shortcut can be remapped, and a clash is spelled out before it bites.
- English or Spanish, from Settings; save folder, PNG or JPEG, file name pattern, open at login.
- Export Diagnostics, to attach to a support email.
