Frostshot keeps your data on your Mac.
The app has no account and no server, and it never connects to the internet, so it has nowhere to send personal data. What you capture stays on your Mac until you choose to share it.
- The app collects nothing. No analytics, no crash reporting, no tracking.
- No account.Nothing to sign up for or sign in to in the app.
- Never online.Frostshot doesn’t connect to the internet.
- All on your Mac.Captures, settings and text recognition stay there.
What Frostshot collects
Nothing. Frostshot has no analytics, no crash reporting, no ads and no tracking of any kind, and none of the code inside it does either. We, the people who make Frostshot, never see your captures, the text in them or how you use the app.
Frostshot never connects to the internet. The Mac App Store version couldn’t even if it tried: macOS gives it no permission to use the network. The only link in the app, the website address in About Frostshot, opens in your browser.
What stays on your Mac
Frostshot keeps only what it needs to do its job, and only on your Mac.
- Captures
- Saved as files in the folder you choose in Settings, Pictures › Frostshot unless you change it. Frostshot doesn’t send copies anywhere.
- Settings
- Your preferences, shortcuts and Looks are kept in Frostshot’s own preferences on your Mac.
- The corner, Kept for Later and Recent Captures
- Captures you haven’t decided about wait in the corner, the ones you keep with ⌥⏎ go to Kept for Later, and what you copy or discard goes to Recent Captures. All three are stored only on your Mac, never in any cloud, and are left out of Time Machine and iCloud backups. In Settings › Captures you can stop keeping corner captures after you quit, clear Kept for Later, and turn Recent Captures off, which deletes it. Kept for Later never expires; Recent Captures keeps 7 days and up to 50 captures by default.
- Text recognition
- Copy Text and automatic redaction read the text in a capture with Apple’s Vision framework, on your Mac. No image or text is sent anywhere to be read.
- Clipboard
- When you copy a capture or its text, it goes to the macOS clipboard like anything else you copy. With Universal Clipboard on, macOS can also offer it to your other Apple devices. Frostshot reads the clipboard only when you choose Open from Clipboard.
- Temporary files
- Sharing, exporting or dragging a capture out makes a temporary copy in Frostshot’s own temporary folder on your Mac.
- Diagnostics
- If you choose Export Diagnostics…, Frostshot saves a plain-text file where you say, for you to read and, if you like, attach to an email. It lists the app and macOS versions, your Mac’s model and displays, whether Screen Recording is granted, your shortcuts and settings, and recent log and timing lines from the app. It never contains your captures, the clipboard, text you typed, file names, folder paths, email addresses or your account name. Frostshot never sends it; it reaches us only if you attach it yourself.
A capture leaves your Mac only when you send it, with Share, AirDrop or Mail, or by pasting it into an app that sends it on. What happens next is up to you and that app.
Why Frostshot asks for Screen Recording
macOS asks your permission before any app can see what’s on your screen. Frostshot needs it to take screenshots of an area, a window or the whole screen, and to show your desktop wallpaper behind a capture when you choose Desktop Wallpaper as a background in the editor. What it sees stays on your Mac. It never records video or audio, and it never sends any of it anywhere.
It’s the only permission Frostshot asks for. You can turn it off at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording.
No account
Frostshot has no accounts. There’s nothing to sign up for in the app, and we don’t know who you are. When you buy Frostshot on the Mac App Store, Apple handles the purchase, and we don’t receive your name, email address or payment details.
What Apple may share with us
If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers (System Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements), Apple may send us crash reports and anonymous usage statistics for Frostshot. Apple collects these, not Frostshot. We use them only to fix bugs, and you can stop sharing there at any time.
Children
Frostshot collects no personal data from anyone, so it collects none from children either.
This website
frostshot.app is a simple site. It sets no cookies and has no ads, and its pages carry no third-party fonts or embeds. If you switch between light and dark with the button at the top, your browser remembers the choice in its own storage, on your device. It’s never sent to us.
To see how many people visit and how fast the pages load, the site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, for visitors outside the European Union only. If you visit from the EU, the analytics script isn’t loaded at all. Elsewhere, a small script from Cloudflare measures each page view without cookies, without storing anything in your browser and without fingerprinting you, and Cloudflare doesn’t use it to follow you across other sites. We see only totals: page views and visits, the pages viewed, the sites that sent visitors here, and visitors’ countries, browsers, operating systems and device types, plus how quickly pages load. Nothing in it tells us who you are. How Cloudflare describes Web Analytics.
Launch email
If you leave your email in the “Notify me” form, we store that address, the date, the language of the page and which page you used, in a database on Cloudflare that only we can read. We use it for one thing: to email you once, on the day Frostshot launches. We never sell it or share it, and we don’t add you to any other list. The form sets no cookies and has no tracking.
To have your email deleted, before or after launch, write to support@frostshot.app from that address and we’ll remove it.
Beta requests
If you ask for a beta invite on the beta page, we store the email you leave and the date, in storage on Cloudflare that only we can read. We use it for one thing: to send you a TestFlight invite. We never sell it or share it, and we delete the list once the beta ends. To be removed sooner, write to support@frostshot.app.
The site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles the technical details of each visit, such as your IP address and browser, to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse, under its own privacy policy. We don’t use them to identify or follow you.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we’ll post the new version on this page and update the date at the top. If Frostshot ever handled data differently, this page and its App Store listing would say so before that version shipped.
